Strong winds fuel fires in Kwazulu Natal

It's been an extremely busy day for fire fighters across KwaZulu-Natal. So far today, they have responded to more than 30 runaway fires - and the day is not yet over.

Strong Berg winds, coupled with dry conditions, have fuelled veld fires in the Midlands and the greater Durban area - especially the western and southern parts.

There has also been a report of gale force winds of over 100km/h at the Durban harbour as well as a dust storm affecting visibility in the Bayhead area.

EThekwini's Fire Department says it has been called out to 21 bush fires in and around the city as well as one dump fire in Wiggins Road, near Mayville.

Simon Thomas from the Fire Protection Association in the Midlands meanwhile says his team has dealt with 11 fires, four of which had to be fought with the help of helicopters.

He says a cold front which is expected from this evening will help to break the fire conditions.

"Tomorrow looks to be a pretty quiet day as well. It looks as though on Saturday afternoon we might get conditions similar to today, but then there's a good chance of rain overnight into Sunday morning," he said.
