The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many South Africans. To obtain critical weather information, the SAWDOS use voluntary weather observers. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe and informed by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the SAWDOS for publication on the Blog. The SAWDOS is a non-profit organization that renders a FREE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE.

Chris Willigenburg (ZS6VB) passed away Monday evening, 20 August 2012 at 6pm.
It is with great sadness and shock that the SAWDOS announce the passing of Chris Willigenburg (ZS6VB) of Nigel, South Africa. Chris was one of the first to become a Weather Observer soon after the then SAWDIS was established on the 8 October 2008. His interest in amateur radio, weather observation, photography, science and technology, earthquakes, and many other educational ventures are all displayed on the SAWDOS and SAWDIS Blogs.
He contributed greatly to the success of the SAWDOS by providing real time information about the weather in the Nigel/Heidelberg area. He was instrumental in sending exceptional photographs to SAWDOS for publication. He was well known for taking pictures of lightning strikes and cloud bursts. On many occasions Chris was instrumental in sending early warnings to the SAWDOS of severe storms approaching the Nigel/Heidelberg area. Being a photographer he had the knowledge and feeling to capture severe weather as it unfolds.
Sadly there were so many that he still would like to have done but he was called for higher duty.
The SAWDOS and South Africa has lost a great weather observer, radio amateur and photographer.
The SAWDOS express it's sincere condolences to Chris's family and friends in this trying time. May the peace which comes from the memories of Chris Willigenburg comfort you as a family now and in the days ahead. He will be sorely missed by me, the SAWDOS and the many that benefited from the great contributions he made to this country.
