Kwazulu Natal fire destroys homes, power lines

Durban - A raging fire in KwaZulu-Natal has destroyed about 20 homes and power lines, the ministry for co-operative governance said on Saturday.

Department spokesperson Vernon Mchunu said the blaze was threatening to cause more havoc and the heavy wind-storm in the region was making matters worse.

"Provincial and municipal disaster management teams have been dispatched to mitigate the risk as the people and property in parts of the North Coast are in danger," said Mchunu.

The fire was heading towards several game and sugar farms in the Ntambanana area.

"The unusually heavy winds for that area are making the blazes to move faster, with a height of an estimated 10 metres," said Mchunu.

The destroyed power lines were part of a multi-million rand project by the department of co-operative governance and power supplier, Eskom.

Officials have urged municipalities and locals to be on standby as the fire could still spread to other areas.
