At 17h10 on Saturday, 04th August, NSRI Durban volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated following reports of a lifeguard missing at Addington Beach.
The missing lifeguard, a male, 22 years old, from Durban, is an experienced lifeguard with over 4 years experience. They were on a routine training mission at the time that he went missing.
When a search by fellow lifeguards revealed no sign of the missing lifeguard NSRI Durban and Police Search and Rescue were activated.
The NSRI Durban volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched the sea rescue craft Eikos Rescuer II and an NSRI rescue vehicle, a Transnet National Ports Authority rescue helicopter and a Police Search and Rescue unit responded.
On arrival on-scene the NSRI, the rescue helicopter and the Police joined lifeguards who were searching for their fellow member but despite an extensive search, which lasted until after dark, no sign of the missing lifeguard has been found.
Police have opened an inquest docket and members from Addington Surf Lifesaving will resume the search tomorrow in cooperation with the Police Search and Rescue.
