M 6.4 and 6.3 two severe earthquakes jolt Northwestern Iran today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 60 km ENE of Tabriz. Both the quakes were at very shallow depth of around 6 miles.
Tremors were felt even in Armenia (Yerevan) and Georgia (Tbilisi).
Tabriz is the fifth largest city and one of the historical capitals of Iran and the capital of East Azerbaijan Province.
Iran is straddled by several major fault lines and has suffered several devastating earthquakes in recent times. The deadliest was a 6.6-magnitude quake which struck the southern city of Bam in December 2003, killing 31,000 people - about a quarter of the population.

-60 villages sustained 50-70% damage, 6 villages 100% destroyed in Northwestern Iran.
-Earthquake caused more than 800 billion rials damage to rural places. The earthquake in the villages Gvyjhbl, Lylan, Bzqvsh, Kurram Valley, ball Drq have suffered the greatest losses.
