Whale stranded at The Point in Mossel Bay. (1 August 2012)

I visited the point late yesterday afternoon to find that a whale has washed up amongst the rocks at The Point in Mossel Bay. The whale was already dead and the carcass was wedged into rocks at The Poort, close to the well known cave beneath the lighthouse. It was clear from the carcass that the whale must have been dead for a short time. I could not observe any decomposition of the carcass and there was no bad smell hanging in the air. However the authorities will have to move fast to get rid of the carcass. Its going to be a mammoth task as the carcass will have to be cut up piece by piece due to the bad terrain.

WARNING: Swimmers and surfers please stay out of the water for the next few days. The possibility exist that sharks may be drawn to the area as a result of the washed up whale carcass.
