A rescue team was searching on Friday for a man who failed to return from a walk in the Franschhoek mountains in the Western Cape, provincial emergency medical services said.
Spokeswoman Keri Davids said a helicopter had been circling the area since 7am and a police dog was tracing the man's scent on the ground.
A team of thirty people were participating in the search.
The man, in his late twenties, went missing on Wednesday. He left the Denneguer Farm in Groendal in the early afternoon to walk up the mountain.
Davids said family members contacted emergency services on Thursday night when the man had not returned.
"Locals from a nearby community have informed us that they passed the man on his way to the mountain, warning him not to continue at that late hour. However, he gave them some of his belongings and continued."
