Extreme Weather in United Arab Emirates on Thursday, 20 September, 2012 at 17:03 (05:03 PM) UTC.

Heavy rain along with thunderstorm pounded parts of the eastern and northern emirates on Thursday afternoon, flooding low-lying areas. It was a sudden development over the Omani area that later swept into the emirates, giving medium to heavy rain in Madam, Al Dahid, Falaj Al Mulla, and parts of Al Ain including Al Shouaib and Khatam Al Shiklah. There was also hailstorm in Madam and strong winds uprooted trees and signboards in different areas. Wadis were also flooded with flash water. Unsettled conditions pushed in strong winds that developed into sand storms in certain areas. The conditions became difficult for motorists to drive through. Eyewitnesses said many drivers stopped along roadsides, particularly on Al Dahid Road, waiting for the weather to clear. The National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) on Thursday warned of the possibility of clouds developing over the eastern region. There was however no forecast for the rain. The NCMS said some 0.6mm rain was recorded in Falaj Al Mullah at around 3.30pm. The rain spell was heavy in Madam, an eastern city of Sharjah Emirate, where thunderstorms and heavy rain continued for a longer period. The weather was completely cloudy over Al Ain but there was no rain the downtown area, but its suburban areas receive light drizzle. The NCMS expects hot weather on Friday during the daytime with partly cloudy conditions in the afternoon over the eastern areas. Winds are expected to be light to moderate in general. Sea will be slight to moderately rough with two to four feet high waves offshore. The national centre also expects an increase in humidity in the coastal, internal, and western areas at night and early in the morning.
