Johannesburg - About 60 people have been evacuated in Durban by the eThekwini municipality following flooding, an official said on Friday.

They were moved to the Amaoti community hall and given blankets and food parcels after their homes collapsed or were flooded on Thursday, spokespersonThabo Mofokeng said in a statement.

The families affected were from KwaNgcolosi, KwaNyuswa and Ntuzuma.

Mofokeng said the municipality would assess the damage to their homes and see if it could provide any help.

Meanwhile, three people were rescued from an island in the Tugela River in Msinga on Friday afternoon.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said a 92-year-old woman was trying to cross the river with her two grandchildren, aged six and 10, when they were trapped by flood waters.

Paramedics were called and helped them across. Three elderly women also received help when they were trapped on one side of the river.
