Gauteng prepares for summer flooding

Johannesburg - Gauteng has put in place plans to manage any flooding this coming summer, an official said on Sunday.

"The Gauteng special operation and response system...had been put in place to provide specialised lifesaving assistance within the province in the event of major flooding, disasters or emergencies," said local government and housing spokesperson Motsamai Motlhaolwa.

Motlhaolwa said there would be a joint operations centre in municipalities. Mutual aid agreements were also in place in case of emergencies.

"Our disaster management programme will go a long way in assisting municipalities in Gauteng to deal with disasters when and where they occur," said MEC Ntombi Mekgwe.

Floods wreaked havoc in Gauteng on Thursday and Friday.

Among others, more than 70 shacks had to be rebuilt in Vumimuzi, Tembisa, on the East Rand on Friday after being destroyed by strong winds.

Mekgwe sympathised with the affected families.

"... I am sending my heartfelt sympathy to you. I am also appealing to the private sector to assist government in dealing with such acts of nature. Your donations will be highly appreciated by the humble people of Gauteng," said Mekgwe.
