'Global warming to shoot-up food prices'

JOHANNESBURG - Non-governmental organisation Oxfam on Wednesday warned of massive global food price spikes in coming years due to extreme weather conditions caused by climate change.

Previous research paid little attention to the impact of climate change on food security.

The research projects by how much the price of grain will rise by 2030, accounting for inflation, should a there be massive droughts or floods.

Oxfam spokesperson Canny Geyer said prices could rise by as much as 120 percent in sub-Saharan Africa, due to one extreme weather event.

“A bag of maize which would normally cost around R145 would shoot up to R320.”

He said poor people would be the most affected, as they spend up to 75 percent of their income on food.
