The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many South Africans. To obtain critical weather information, the SAWDOS use voluntary weather observers. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe and informed by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the SAWDOS for publication on the Blog. The SAWDOS is a non-profit organization that renders a FREE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE.

HAMNET Weekly Report 23/9/2012
The Global Disaster Alert and Coordination system, GDACS website again was dominated by quite a number of activities around the globe.

Tropical Cyclones!
Four cyclones were dominant but none of them causing any real cause for concern as at least three of them were out at sea namely Thirteen-E 12 off the coast of Mexico as well as Cyclone Lane also out in the Pacific off the coast of Mexico.
Cyclone Jelawat in the Philippines with winds reaching over 200 km per hour was also out at sea and at this stage not heading toward the mainland.
Cyclone Nadine 12 off the Azores in the Atlantic was also mainly out at sea and not causing any real problems to the Island.
Floods!
India, Pakistan, Thailand, China and Nigeria all suffered to lesser or greater extent of flooding causing displacing of the population and damage to property.
Locally, a large bank of rainy weather moved across the country with rain reported in many areas. Gauteng was awakened early on Saturday morning with a severe electrical storm and around 12 mm or rain.
It is also with regret that Hamnet bids farewell to a staunch and loyal member of Hamnet for many years.
Martin Harper, ZS6MSG (ZS5VO) became a silent key on Tuesday this week. Martin will be remembered for his leadership as Provincial Director in KZN for many years before Wally Perfect and later Keith Lowes took over the reigns.
He was also a keen member of the team in the QSL Bureau assisting with the sorting of cards. Martin was often my right hand man during communications situations as he was at home most the time and always available on the air and by landline. RIP Martin and to Barbara and the family, our sincere condolences.
Reporting for Hamnet, this is Francois Botha, ZS6BUU.
