Thousands of people have been displaced in the Zululand District Municipality after their homes were washed away by heavy rainfall over the past three days.
Mayor Zanele KaMagwaza Msibi says in Ulundi alone, more than 1 000 homes were destroyed.
The Nongoma, Phongolo and eDumbe areas were also badly affected.
Several roads have been washed away by the rain in various parts of municipality.
KaMagwaza Msibi says by yesterday afternoon the Disaster Unit had provided temporary shelter, blankets and food to hundreds of residents.
She's urging residents living in mud huts to find temporary shelter with relatives living in brick house until the weather clears up.
"There is one family whom I am told - there is a grandmother of about 75 years old, who was in the house with about 14 grandchildren when their two-roomed house fell down. Unfortunately they were hurt.
"We want to also check if the provincial government can't come as urgently as possible and assist, because the work is beyond us."
