The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many South Africans. To obtain critical weather information, the SAWDOS use voluntary weather observers. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe and informed by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the SAWDOS for publication on the Blog. The SAWDOS is a non-profit organization that renders a FREE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE.

City’s disaster response teams to the rescue of 68 fire victims
KHAYELITSHA: At 13:15 on Wednesday, 17 October 2012 a fire at c/o Lansdowne Road and Symphony Way, “Thabo Mbeki West”, Phillipi. The fire gutted 12 shacks leaving 53 people displaced.
VALHALLA PARK: A fire that occurred at 14:46 this afternoon [Wednesday, 17 October 2012] destroyed 9 shacks leaving 15 people homeless.
The City’s disaster response teams assisted the victims with food parcels; baby packs; blankets; clothing and fire kits.
The cause of the fire is undetermined and authorities will investigate the incidents.
