Johannesburg - Dial Direct Insurance has been flooded with claims following the hailstorm that ravaged Gauteng on Saturday, the short-term insurer said on Tuesday.
Dial Direct said it received 3 302 motor and non-motor claims within 12 hours (worth millions of rands), with more claims coming through daily.
The hailstorm that hit Gauteng on Saturday left a trail of destruction. Hail the size of golf balls shattered car windscreens, windows and bonnets and crushed roofs, patio glass and garden furniture.
“This is definitely one of the most destructive storms we have ever seen.
"Dial Direct staff worked overtime to capture these claims and so far, the majority have been finalised,” said Bradley Du Chenne, senior executive of Dial Direct.
A large percentage of claims came from Primrose in Germiston. Other areas that were badly affected include Elsburg, Sunnyridge, Symhurst, Boksburg and Edenvale.
“Hail claims are fast tracked which means that they are finalised when they are reported. So far 74% of all claims submitted on 22 October have already been finalised.
"While there have been reports of a buildings glass shortage, contingency plans have been put in place and we don’t foresee a delay,” said Du Chenne.
Hail storms are unpredictable and although Gauteng has been given the all clear for the remainder of the week, Du Chenne urged motorists and homeowners to be cautious.
"If another storm occurs, take cover immediately. Motorists are advised to pull off the road, preferably under a bridge.
"It’s also advisable to store a blanket in your car to protect you from shattered windscreens.”
