The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many South Africans. To obtain critical weather information, the SAWDOS use voluntary weather observers. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe and informed by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the SAWDOS for publication on the Blog. The SAWDOS is a non-profit organization that renders a FREE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE.

Fire leaves 16 people homeless and claims life of an adult male
KHAYELITSHA: A devastating fire that occurred at 22:18 on Friday, 26 October 2012 destroying 1 shack at 456 DT Section, Site C, Nyandeni Crescent, in Khayelitsha. The fire resulted in the displacement of 4 people and claimed the life of an adult male. The identity of the deceased has not been released.
FRANKDALE: At 22:12 on Friday, 26 October 2012 a fire occurred in the informal settlement situated adjacent to the Frankdale Tip Site, off Frankdale Road. The fire gutted 3 shacks leaving 4 people displaced.
PHILLIPI: During the early hours of this morning at approximately 03:21 on Saturday, 27 October 2012 a fire destroyed 3 shacks leaving 8 people homeless at 19589 Gqogqra Crescent, Phillipi.
The City’s disaster response teams will be assisting the victims with food parcels; baby packs; blankets; clothing and fire kits.
The cause of the fires is undetermined and authorities will probe an investigation.
