Fire leaves 41 people displaced over the weekend – disaster response teams assists victims


1. LOTUS RIVER: Three shacks was burnt down at 4-11th Avenue, Phumlani Village Informal Settlement, off Strandfontein Road, Lotus River resulted in the displacement of twelve people.

2. BLOEKOMBOS: At 02:03 on Saturday, 06 October 2012 a formal house caught fire and was severely damaged at 20295 Raigala, Bloekombos near Kraaifontein.

3. KHAYELITSHA: At 16:48 on Saturday, 06 October 2012 one shack was destroyed leaving four people displaced at 40441 Gqobhoka Crescent, Khayelitsha.

4. ATLANTIS: One formal house caught fire at 65 Goede Hoop Street, Section C, Atlantis at 16:08 on Saturday, 06 October 2012. The blaze affected one room at the rear of the building. Seven patients were treated for smoke inhalation on the scene.

5. WALLACEDENE: During the early hours of the morning on Sunday, 07 October 2012 at approximately 05:08 one shack was destroyed affecting two people at 23021 Gwaza Crescent, Wallacedene in Kraaifontein.

6. KHAYELITSHA: At 18:31 on Sunday, 07 October 2012 one shack was destroyed leaving six people displaced at Site C, Idada Avenue, Taiwan Informal Settlement, Khayelitsha.

7. KHAYELITSHA: At 21:25 on Sunday, 07 October 2012 one shack caught alight at 58352, Igxiya Street, Khayelitsha. Upon arrival of the Fire & Rescue Services was extinguished by the occupants and the neighbor. The fire resulted in the displacement of five people.

8. KHAYELITSHA: At 21:46 on Sunday, 07 October 2012 one shack caught alight at Elijah Barayi Crescent, Khayelitsha resulting in the displacement of 2 people.

9. WESBANK: At 22:49 on Sunday, 07 October 2012 a fire one shack leaving three people displaced at 23 Baxley Crescent, Wesbank. One person sustained slight lacerations to the hands and one adult female was treated for shock by paramedics; whereafter they were transported to hospital further medical care.

The City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre assisted the 41 victims of fire with the supply of food parcels, blankets, clothing and building material.

The causes of the incidents are unconfirmed and the SAPS have opened an inquest docket to investigate the fire occurrence of these fires.
