Mopping-up underway in Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga - Mopping-up operations are underway in eastern Mpumalanga after two days of heavy rain, officials said on Thursday.

“We are giving out food parcels and blankets in the Kwamhlushwa area,” said Nkomazi municipal spokesman Cyril Ripinga.

More rainfall in the area was expected.

“(The weather service) said we will have a 60 percent (chance) of rainshowers this evening (Thursday),” he said.

Ripinga said disaster management teams would be on standby.

Heavy rain and floods led to the death of a seven-year-old boy in Nkomazi on Tuesday. He was killed when the roof of his home collapsed.

“Some houses collapsed, while others had their roofing blown off,” said Ripinga.

Three people in the boy's household were hospitalised with serious injuries. Five others from nearby homes were also injured.

“They are all still in hospital in a stable condition,” Ripinga said.

Officials called for people living in low-lying areas and those close to rivers and dams to be careful.

Motorists were also warned to be careful on the wet roads.
