Night vision cameras will be installed on an N2 bridge near Umhlanga in KwaZulu-Natal to catch people who throw rocks at vehicles, Sanral said on Wednesday.
"This new monitoring system should be implemented by mid-November," said regional manager of the SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral), Logashri Sewnarain.
He said two incidents were recently reported where rocks were thrown at passing vehicles from the Blackburn pedestrian bridge.
In the past, the rock throwing had resulted in deaths, he said.
The pedestrian bridge was on the N2 between Blackburn village and Umhlanga.
"We are looking at the design to incorporate a closure of the pedestrian screen at the bridge, to stop criminals from throwing rocks and heavy objects onto the highway below," he said.
This was expected to be done within two or three months.
