Bloemfontein - A huge veld fire which destroyed some 60 000ha between Kathu and Kuruman was brought under control, the Volksblad newspaper reported on Tuesday.
Farmers had already started estimating the damage and made an urgent request for fodder, diesel, and money for transport costs.
John Taolo Gaetsewe municipality disaster spokesperson Johan Rossouw said the fire no longer posed a serious danger and was still burning only in the mountainous areas. It had been raging since the weekend.
According to the Volksblad it was not known how the fire started because there were no weather conditions to cause it.
However, farmers were considering opening a case of arson with police.
At present farmers need lucerne for a period of 14 days for 5 000 animals. People who could help should contact Agri-Kuruman on 053 712 3922.
