The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many South Africans. To obtain critical weather information, the SAWDOS use voluntary weather observers. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe and informed by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the SAWDOS for publication on the Blog. The SAWDOS is a non-profit organization that renders a FREE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE.

One minor dies in shack fire – 13 other homeless
DURBANVILLE: At approximately 03:00 on Sunday, 28 October 2012 a fire gutted two shacks at 141 and 142 Section C, Fisantekraal Informal Settlement that was extinguished by the occupants and bystanders. The incident was not reported to the Fire and Rescue Services; however the City’s disaster response teams investigate the incident and arrange for the necessary assistance to be provided. As a result of the fire three adults and one minor were left homeless.
HOUT BAY: One backyard dwelling was destroyed at 04:29 by a fire that occurred at U-Block, Salamander Road, Hout Bay. The fire caused the displacement of eight persons.
KHAYELITSHA: A fire that was reported at 05:39 on Sunday, 28 October 2012 destroyed one shack leaving two people displaced at Ntlazane Road, Enkanini Informal Settlement.
PHILLIPI: A fire occurred at 08:18 on Sunday, 28 October 2012, at KD168, Kosovo Informal Settlement that destroyed one shack resulting in the displacement of one person. One minor sustained fatal burn wounds as a result of the fire.
The City’s disaster response teams assisted the victims with food parcels; baby packs; blankets; clothing and fire kits.
The cause of the fires that occurred is undetermined.
The authorities will probe an investigation in the occurrence of the fires.
