Rain Update: Nelson Mandela Bay
PRESS RELEASE - 20 OCTOBER 2012
RAIN FORECAST
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality wishes to caution residents that more rain is expected. In terms of a forecast by the South African Weather Services, mild to medium falls can be expected overnight, with rain clearing towards noon on Sunday. However, on Sunday afternoon, heavy downpours are expected, lasting over night. The weather is expected to start clearing on Monday.
The Municipality advises residents to take all necessary precautions and preferably not venture onto the roads.
RELIEF CENTRES
The main areas affected include Chatty, Kleinskool, Missionvale, Booysens Park, Despatch, Salt Lake, Khayamnandi and KwaNobuhle. The Municipality has established a number of relief centres at which flood victims are being accommodated overnight and provided with food and other basic necessities as well as general assistance. Today, a number of additional relief centres were established. At the Masibambane Hall in KwaNobuhle, relief was issued to 209 residents.
DONORS AND DONATIONS
With the weather expected to take a turn for the worse on Sunday, the Municipality appeals to local business and residents to donate items such as bread, tinned food, soup packets, vegetables and disposal nappies. The most urgent and pressing need is for blankets.
To make donations, please contact the Disaster Management Centre on 041 501 7980 or 041 501 7988.
The Municipality wishes to thank local NGOs, church groups, private individuals and businesses who have contributed to alleviate the plight of our flood victims. Special mention must be made of father and son team, Frans and Daniel Barnard of Uitenhage, who placed their services and 4 x 4 vehicle at the disposal of the Municipality and completed a number of rescue missions to assist residents and motorists at risk.
During a visit to the Joint Operational Centre at the South End Fire Station, from where relief efforts are coordinated, the Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, had warm words of praise and encouragement for the hard-working staff of the Disaster Management Sub-Directorate, as well as other Directorates, who man the Centre.
Ends.
