Search continues for missing Eastern Cape flood victims

The search for two men who went missing in flooded rivers Kwanobuhle and Kirkwood continued this week.

Police spokesperson, lieutenant-colonel Priscilla Naidu, says members of the Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage K-9 units have been searching since Monday for 19-year-old John Smit, who was swept of a low-level bridge in Kwanobuhle.

"The body of a 32 year old Kirkwood man is still missing when he was swept off into the Wit river on Saturday," Naidu said.

She said "he man only known as Lulama was with a friend when the incident occurred. The friend who was also swept into the river was rescued by a person who witnessed the incident."

"By the time, the good Samaritan could go back, there was no sign of Lulama. The waters of the Wit river is still very dangerous to enter and police will continue the search for him tomorrow (Thursday) once the water has subsided."
