The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many South Africans. To obtain critical weather information, the SAWDOS use voluntary weather observers. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe and informed by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the SAWDOS for publication on the Blog. The SAWDOS is a non-profit organization that renders a FREE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE.

City steps up its Disaster Risk Reduction Campaign in informal settlements ahead of Festive Season
The City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Centre is intensifying its public awareness campaign, with the introduction of a community-based educational theatre programme in informal settlements across Cape Town.
Theatre and drama will be used as a vehicle to raise the level of awareness in areas where communities are at a high risk for fires. The first of these sessions will take place in Philippi.
Volunteers will also hand out information pamphlets and provide residents with practical tips for reducing their vulnerability to fires.
This campaign offers a range of practical tips to mitigate against fire hazard and to ensure a state of readiness by communities for unforeseen emergencies and disastrous situations.
As part of the ‘Protect yourself against fires’ campaign, vulnerable communities will be educated through the performing arts, featuring music, dance, audience participation, comedy and drama.
