Transnet has assured residents in Amanzimtoti that the wreckage of a goods train that plunged into a river yesterday poses no threat to the environment.
An investigator from Jo'burg went to the area to assess the situation at the accident scene and to determine whether it's safe enough to start removing the wreckage.
The goods train plunged into the Amanzimtoti River yesterday morning, following torrential rains across the province.
Emergency services said the heavy rain and rising water levels caused part of the railway line to slide into the water.
Transnets's Selby Dlamini says a carriage, which was carrying timber, is still lying in the water.
Dlamini says repairs to the railway line will only get underway after the train is removed.
