Fire slays 37 year old male in Gugulethu fire

At 03:22 on Monday, 28 January 2013 a fire was reported that occurred at NY108 [off Klipfontein Road], at the Barcelona Informal Settlement in Gugulethu.

The blaze engulfed three shacks that were completely destroyed leaving 3 people displaced.

During the firefighting efforts at approximately 03:56 firefighters found the body of Zanemzula Maxwell Mkunqwna (37 years) that sustained fatal burn wounds. He could not escape the blaze and was succumbed by his injuries.

The Fire & Rescue Services extinguished the inferno at 04:09.

The City’s disaster response teams assisted the fire victims with the supply of food parcels, blankets, baby packs, clothing and building material; including emergency psychosocial trauma counselling.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and the SAPS have opened an inquest to investigate the incident.
