The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many South Africans. To obtain critical weather information, the SAWDOS use voluntary weather observers. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe and informed by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the SAWDOS for publication on the Blog. The SAWDOS is a non-profit organization that renders a FREE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE.

Fire claims life of 64 year old male in Phillipi
A fire occurred at 17:41 yesterday afternoon [Thursday, 07 February 2013] at 16594 Diya Street at the Brown’s Farm Informal Settlement [off the c/o Mzazi and Diya Streets] in Phillipi.
The fire gutted one shack leaving 11 people displaced.
The fire claimed the life of Khawceza Nontsele (64 years) that could not escape when the shack was engulfed in flames.
The City’s disaster response teams will be offering assistance to the family in the form of food, blankets, clothing and building material; including trauma counselling.
The circumstances regarding the occurrence of the incident is been investigated and the SAPS have opened an inquest docket.
