SEA RESCUE – WEST COAST and HATBEESPOORT DAM – Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th, February, 2013.
Hartbeespoort Dam:
On Saturday, 23rd February, during the afternoon and during the North West Keel Boat Sailing Championships, on Hartbeespoort Dam, while NSRI Hartbeespoort Dam were conducting a safety stand-by during the sailing regatta, while competitors were taking a break from sailing to escape the very hot conditions, NSRI Hartbeespoort Dam were activated by the Yacht Club manager who had noticed a jet-skier in trouble 500 meters off-shore from Ifafi.
NSRI Hartbeespoort Dam volunteers launched the NSRI rescue craft and on arrival on-scene found the jet-ski was heavy laden with water and sinking and the male skipper was suffering exhaustion from trying to save his jet-ski from sinking.
Rod Pitter, NSRI Hartbeespoort Dam station commander, said that the man, aged in his mid twenties, who did not want to give his details, was rescued onto the NSRI rescue craft and an NSRI rescue swimmer steered his jet-ski while we towed the jet-ski safely to shore.
Once safely ashore he required no further assistance was his jet-ski was recovered.
It is unknown what caused the jet-ski to fill with water.
Yzerfontein:
At 05h36, on Sunday, 24th February, NSRI Yzerfontein volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated following a request for assistance from the 33 foot sailing vessel FTI FLYER, with 3 male crew onboard, reporting to be taking water between Dassen Island and Yzerfontein.
NSRI Yzerfontein duty rescue crew launched the sea rescue boat ROTARY ONWARD and on arrival on-scene found the yacht to be heavy laden with water leaking into the yacht and the 3 crew were taken off the yacht, onto the NSRI rescue craft, and NSRI took the yacht under tow and began to tow her towards Cape Town.
NSRI Table Bay were activated at 06h26 to respond to rendezvous with NSRI Yzerfontein to take over the tow and to tow the yacht to Table Bay's Port and NSRI Table Bay launched SPIRIT OF VODACOM.
On arrival on-scene NSRI Table Bay took over the tow from NSRI Yzerfontein and are towing the yacht to the Port of Table Bay. The 3 'casualty' crew were transferred onto SPIRIT OF VODACOM.
It appears that the yacht is taking water through the propellor motor joint but this will be investigated more closely by the owners once she is brought to shore.
