The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many South Africans. To obtain critical weather information, the SAWDOS use voluntary weather observers. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe and informed by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the SAWDOS for publication on the Blog. The SAWDOS is a non-profit organization that renders a FREE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE.

Solomon Islands: Earthquake and Tsunami - Feb 2013
An 8.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the Santa Cruz Islands in the southeast Solomon Islands archipelago on 6 Feb 2013. Initial information suggests that a tsunami wave traveled 500 meters inland. 431 houses have been damaged or destroyed in Temotu Province, leaving 3,500 people displaced. (OCHA, 07 Feb 2013)
