ActionAid is planning to provide temporary shelter and repair damaged schools, health centres and homes in Mozambique where fierce storms have killed 25 people and left tens of thousands homeless.
Cyclone Dando swept through southern parts of the country last week prompting downpours which combined with unusually heavy seasonal rains, caused flooding in some areas. Strong winds and flood waters damaged houses, classrooms, health centres and markets.
Bridges have been destroyed and in some places the electricity supply is still cut off. Several areas of the country remain flooded with many roads impassable. And with more rains forecast, the situation looks set to deteriorate.
ActionAid Mozambique Country Director Amade Suca said: "Our teams are in place to support communities should they be hit by further rounds of rains and storms. We will be supporting local rescue efforts in collaboration with local partners and communities.
"We will be focussing our relief efforts on securing a safe environment for women and children, who are always hit hardest by disasters like these.
"And we plan to support children to go back to school so they can continue their education as soon as possible."
ActionAid is liaising with the government's disaster and risk management committees to plan ActionAid's role in the recovery and is also providing expertise and logistical support, such as vehicles, to local response committees.
Members of staff are also visiting the families of sponsored children to see if and how they are affected.
ActionAid continues to monitor the situation across the country and is ready to scale up response in line with the needs of those affected.
