A Durban family had a narrow escape when a mudslide swept into their house early on Thursday.
Ncumisa Mjungula, 32, said the family had been sleeping in their May Road, Rosehill, home when a municipal pipe near their property burst.
“I heard a loud noise of water as if it was raining. I woke up and saw the water pouring inside the house,” said Mjungula.
Then she heard a loud noise as the roof collapsed.
“The burst pipe flooded the house with mud and water and a portion of the wall collapsed.
“The force of the water tore through the kitchen door and windows and destroyed many of our belongings.”
Mjungula and her husband, Mthetho Phungula, grabbed their six-year-old daughter, Athenkosi, to take her to safety.
The head of the eThekwini emergency and disaster management unit, Vincent Ngubane, said a team would be sent to help the family.
