Cape firefighters battle in the wind

Cape Town - Firefighters were on alert in the Bainskloof and Stanford areas of the Western Cape on Monday ahead of an expected increase in wind and high temperatures.

Working On Fire spokesperson Leanne Mckrill said fires there had continued to burn throughout the day.

“We have had two teams on the fire burning in the Stanford area for last three days. In Bainskloof, we have three teams,” she said.

“Hot and windy conditions are expected to increase on Tuesday. In both areas, firefighters are on alert. Anything can happen.”

McKrill said firefighters were also helping nature conservation officials to take precautions.

About 100 people were evacuated from their homes at the weekend when runaway fires fanned by strong winds spread over mountains in the Bainskloof Pass near Wellington and near Stanford.

Some Bainskloof farmworkers and their families were evacuated. Campers at Steenbok Park were also asked to leave.
