Cyclone threat eases in Fiji

A tropical depression threatening already flood ravaged Fiji has weakened and is no longer expected to become a cyclone – but another system could turn cyclonic and also affect New Zealand.

Last week a deadly storm claimed six lives and caused millions of dollars in damage in Western Fiji’s tourist belt.

The Fiji National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi this morning was fearing a new depression would turn cyclonic, but they now say it will not.

''It is not expected to intensify into a tropical cyclone.''

However, heavy rain is expected to fall across much of Fiji for the rest of the week.

But the Honolulu-based Joint Typhoon Warning Center is raising the possibility of a system 700 kilometres north west of Port Vila in Vanuatu becoming a cyclone.

They said: ''The potential for the development of a significant tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours is medium.''

Many of the cyclones that reach New Zealand emerge from the area north of Vanuatu.

Meanwhile the Fiji Ministry of Health said there were no confirmed cases of flood-related communicable diseases such as typhoid, dengue fever, leptospirosis, and diarrhoea following last week's storm.

Authorities say water and electricity has been fully restored across the western district.

Anti-mosquito spraying to prevent dengue fever will start in Sigatoka, Nadi and Lautoka today.
