Two men drowned at a Durban beach on Sunday, after an early morning swim.
KZN police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said that a group of taxi operators visited North Beach at about 5am, when tragedy struck.
It's believed 23-year-old Nhlanhla Ngcobo waded into the water and got into distress after being swept out to sea by a strong current.
Zwane said Ngcobo's friend, 18-year-old Thulasizwe Skhakhane, swam in after Ngcobo in an attempt to rescue him, but he too did not re-emerge.
The taxi operators were believed to have been at the beach on a family outing.
“A local surfer later recovered one body and the second body was found by the Saps and eThekwini search and rescue unit at about 11am.”
Zwane said an inquest docket had been opened for investigation.
It's believed both men were swimming without the permission of life guards.
