Lifeguards at the notorious beach in Port St Johns are considering quitting their only job in fear of falling prey to sharks.
The lifeguards said this week they were too scared to get into the water after witnessing the deaths of swimmers, including their colleagues, at the town’s once-popular Second Beach.
They made the statements after Lungisani Msungubali was killed following a shark attack last Sunday.
The guards’ despondency has since worsened following reports from the KwaZulu- Natal Sharks Board that installing sharks nets at the beach was not an option.
“The sharks are on a mission to kill and it looks like they are unstoppable as the attacks increase every year. I cannot continue working under these conditions,” said lifeguard Vuyo Maza.
“Every time there is an attack it leaves us horrified and people expect us to know when sharks will attack again.
