The City of Cape Town's Health Department has urged residents to take the necessary precautions as warmer temperatures lure more rodents and flies.
Food outlets and restaurants are most at risk of attracting cockroaches, flies and rats.
Consumers are reminded not to leave food out in the open and to regularly take out the trash.
Mayoral committee member for health, Lungiswa James says residents can be extremely ill if they come into contact with contaminated food.
“Food should always be covered. People need to ensure flies do not have access to their food,” she says.
James added they have done a lot in the 2011 to reduce rodents.
“The city has been very proactive in trying to get rid of the rodents. We work with the storm water guys to spray especially in areas where problems have been identified.”
