Japan assists Mozambique in the wake of cyclone and floods

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has dispatched emergency relief supplies to Mozambique following the cyclone and floods which have ravaged southern and central parts of the country in recent days.

Emergency goods were dispatched from JICA’s South Africa warehouse, arriving at Maputo International Airport on 6 February. A handover ceremony was held at 12:15 (local time) on that day at the the National Disasters Management Institute (INGC) in the airport.

The ceremony was attended by Mr. Eiji Hashimoto, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Mozambique, Mr. Shinichi Asazuma, Director of the Second Division for Africa in the Japanese Foreign Ministry and Mr. Hitoshi Matsumoto, Senior Representative of JICA Mozambique.

Amongst the attendees from Mozambique was Mr. Joao Riberio, Director General of the INGC.

During the ceremony, Japan expressed sincere sympathy to those who have been affected by the cyclone and floods, and delivered a message that Japan will never forget the solidarity shown by the Mozambican people in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake. In addition, Japanese delegates stated that the reciprocated assistance reflects the humanitarian solidarity between the people of Mozambique and Japan. Japan pledged to continue to support and cooperate with Mozambique as a development partner.

In response, Mr. Joao Riberio expressed his gratitude to Japan for its emergency supplies, and assured that the goods would be delivered to those most in need as soon as possible.

The supplies will be distributed by the Government of Mozambique to the victims of the disasters and JICA will conduct necessary monitoring of their distribution.
