Fire destroys 6 hostel units in Gugulethu – 25 people homeless Fire destroys 6 hostel units in Gugulethu – 25 people homeless

A fire occurred at approximately 00:56 on Saturday, 18 February 2012, at the Traverso Hostels situated at NY109, Gugulethu.

The fire severely damaged 6 rooms of the two hostels that is the property of the City of Cape Town resulting in the displacement of 25 people.

The occupants of the affected flat units’ loss all their personal belongings in the fire.

The City’s building inspectorate was called upon to examine the damages caused to the building. It was determined that the fire has rendered the units structurally unsound and issued an order for emergency repair work to be undertaken.

The City’s Housing Department and insurance company have been notified that assessed the damages and will initiate measures to repair the units.

The neighbours assisted the fire victims with accommodation until the units are repaired.

No persons sustained injuries and all persons have been accounted for.

The City’s disaster response teams provided social assistance and humanitarian relief aid to the victims that were left displaced by the fire with food parcels, blankets and clothing that lost all their personal belongings.

The cause of the fire is undetermined; and the authorities will investigate the incident.
