A twelve-year-old boy drowned in a dam in a rural area on the outskirts of Polokwane in Limpopo earlier this evening.
The cause of the incident and the series of events leading up to it remain unclear and will form the subject of a South African Police Force investigation.
Common cause information suggests that the boy had been part of a large group of youths swimming in the dam, seeking some respite from the scorching heat.
He got into distress and disappeared beneath the surface, immersed for an unknown period of time.
Netcare911 Paramedics arrived at the scene to find that the boy’s body had been recovered and pulled to the side. He was declared dead at the scene.
