Johannesburg - A South African Airways plane carrying 153 passengers skidded and veered off the runway when it touched down in heavy rain in Sao Paulo, Brazil last Friday.
No passengers were injured.
The Aviation Herald reported that the SAA Airbus A330-200 skidded shortly after it touched down in heavy rain at Guarulhos airport.
"Some gear went over grass aside of the runway before the aircraft returned onto the runway and came to a stop with a number of tyres deflated," the report stated.
"The crew managed to steer the aircraft back onto the runway before slowing the aircraft to taxi speed and stopping the aircraft after vacating the runway via high speed exit DD about 2 300 metres down the runway," the report stated.
The runway was closed for about six minutes for an inspection and the removal of dirt.
'Heck of a job'
The aircraft underwent an inspection, and was not able to depart on its return flight.
Flight SA-222 had departed from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.
A passenger on the plane, Johann Muller, commented in the Aviation Herald that the pilot "did a heck of a job" to land in those conditions.
"Literally 100 metres before we hit the runway the rain poured down and before that it was completely clear. We were circling for 45 minutes before we got the clear from the tower to land and the pilot made the passengers aware of the situation the whole time.
"After the sliding on the runway, the captain remained completely calm and made no fuss of the near disastrous landing. Being a frequent traveller, I could hear the concern and relief in his voice. I believe the tower should have given better indications of the weather as this was very misleading," Muller wrote.
SAA was unavailable for comment.
