Cape Town officials are holding trials in Maitland this week to test the mettle of would-be firefighters.
Some 3,000 Capetonians have applied to participate.
Adrian Mandolin (19) from Macassar stands in line clutching his bag while some around him look uncertain about the task at hand.
The teenager said he was ready for anything and has been training for several months.
Mandolin's uncle was a firefighter and he is hoping to follow in his footsteps.
However, trials are not easy.
Applicants have to run 2.4 kilometres, lift weights and carry two 25 kilogram drums along a distance of 100 metres.
Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Theo Layne said only 20 people will get the job.
He said over 9,000 people underwent trials in 2011.
