Western Cape authorities estimate it will cost millions to repair damage caused by several fires over the past few days.
Major fires in the Cape Winelands and Overberg districts have ravaged thousands of hectares of vegetation, forests and plantations.
Environmental Affairs MEC Anton Bredell says, “It’s very dry so I’m very worried. We’ve budgeted around R5.5 million and if it continues like this, we’ll have to overspend.”
Meanwhile, firefighters are still struggling to extinguish the vegetation fire at Stanford, near Hermanus.
The blaze began on Saturday.
Overstrand Fire Chief Riaan Jakobs says ground crews are on site.
“There’s one fire that’s still burning and we are busy trying to extinguish it,” he says.
