I would like to know: There was early last week a earthquake as well in Augrabies which they said was about 4.5M on the richters scale. Some people here say there are warnings out for a big earthquake coming in augrabies area. Is that true or false. - Cherise van Eck
SAWDOS - The SAWDOS is not aware of any warnings relating to earthquakes in the Augrabies area.
An earthquake of 5.0M on the Richterscale was recorded last year in December. Here are the particulars:
Date and Time: Sunday, 18 December 2011 at 20:07:08.50 SAST
Magnitude: 5.0 (Local)
Depth: 5.0 km (Fixed)
Location: -28.671° South, 20.477° East
Region: Augrabies area, Northern Cape Province
Source: Seismology Unit of the Council for Geoscience
Seismologists say small series, or swarms, of quakes occur throughout the world, all of the time and they rarely lead to a huge quake. But there are others that disagree. The twitching that going on now in the Augrabies area is likely normal movement as a result of the change in stressing rate. Constant quakes of varying sizes are normal and the frequency of quakes varies over time.
Don’t overly focus on the activity in the Augrabies area. My wager would be that the next big quake in South Africa or Africa will occur in a place that we’re not watching or don’t expect.
It’s pointless to live in fear of an earthquake. The smart thing to do is to make sure you’re prepared to cope with a catastrophic event, which could occur at any time — including when there’s virtually no small quakes occurring.
The SAWDOS request people to forward the following information to the SAWDOS when they feel an earthquake.
