Picture: Andrew Aveley

At 18h14 on Saturday 03 March NSRI Knysna duty crew were called out following reports of a drowning in progress at Leisure Isle between the Guard Hut and Green Hole on Knysna Lagoon.

Graeme Harding and NSRI trainee crewman Jan Smith were braaing on Leisure Isle, close to the scene at the time and immediately responded while the Knysna duty crew prepared to launch a sea rescue boat.

On arrival on-scene Graeme and Jan found a 4 year old boy lying on a towel and short of breath and unconscious. He had been pulled out of the water by bystanders.

They began resuscitation efforts and the child, who is from Nekkies, and was on a day out with his family, responded well to their efforts, regaining consciousness and breathing easier. An ER-24 ambulance was summoned and the child, in a stable condition, was transported to hospital for further treatment and for observation for secondary drowning.

The toddler got into difficulty while paddling in shallow water.

He was accompanied to hospital by his mother.
