A man is fighting for his life in the Netcare Krugersdorp Private Hospital after a near drowning incident at Coronation Dam in Voortrekker Road, Krugersdorp, this afternoon. (4 March 2012)
The cause of the incident and the series of events leading up to it remain unclear.
Common cause information indicates that the eighteen-year-old had been among a group of friends and had been swimming to retrieve a rugby ball in the water. He disappeared beneath the surface and was immersed for approximately ten minutes.
He was pulled from the water by his friends and a nurse who was also at the dam with family initiated CPR. Netcare911 Paramedics arrived at the scene to find CPR in progress. They took over care of the man and after nearly an hour, his condition improved.
He was rapidly transported by ambulance to the nearby hospital for further critical care.
