Street kids bear brunt of Irina

A Durban NGO has its hands full following this weekend's storm. AbaKrestu Foundation has seen an influx of street children to its shelter in the city centre.

Spokesperson Larry Crampton says nearly 100 children came to the foundation, with nothing but wet clothes on.

He says all their belongings were destroyed in the heavy downpour caused by tropical storm Irina.
Crampton says most of the children sleep in drains to hide from the police and because of the flood waters they have had to evacuate their make-shift homes.

"Most of them are sleeping in places they are not supposed to, and with the flood water coming through they have lost their possessions that they have so they have no dry clothes, they have got no bedding and they just arrived at our place saying 'we're hungry and we're cold."

Crampton says they are doing the best they can to assist the children, but need help from the public.

"We can't turn them away. [But] we're not a shelter - we are an organisation that helps them. If they want help, we will help them. We can accommodate them in an emergency crisis like this, we can take up to 100 kids [but] we are desperate for blankets, we're desperate for clothes for the little kids."
