Fires in Cape Town leaves 65 people homeless – 1 person dies

At 22:32 on Friday, 06 April 2012 a fire occurred at 16 Sydney Taylor Street, New Woodlands, Mitchell’s Plain that resulted in structural damages to the dwelling. One adult female suffered smoke inhalation.

Another fire occurred at 23:28 on Friday, 06 April 2012 at BM Section, off Lansdowne Road, Khayelitsha that destroyed 6 shacks resulting in the displacement of 20 people. One adult male could not escape the flames and died. The cause is undetermined and the SAPS will probe an investigation.

A third fire incident occurred at 00:42 on Saturday, 07 April 2012 at the Sweet Homes Informal Settlement, off Weltevrede Drive, near Phillipi, that gutted 15 shacks resulting in the displacement of 45 people. No persons sustained injuries.

The City’s disaster response teams will be assisting the fire victims during the course of the day with food parcels, clothing, blankets and building material.

The City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre appeals to residents to be careful when working with open flames. When going to bed, residents should isolate electrical devices and extinguish gas burners, candles, lamps and paraffin stoves in order to prevent fires.
