Johannesburg - A gas leak at a soap factory in Boksburg is under control but emergency personnel will remain for another five to six hours, Ekurhuleni emergency services said on Monday.
The leak of LP gas - a mixture of propane and butane - caused Commissioner Street and Brakpan Road to be closed as a precaution, spokesperson Vincent Khoza said.
He said that the leak was discovered by a truck driver at 09:30am at a tanker at a Unilever factory.
No one was harmed by the flammable gas, but the factory would be closed for the day.
Khoza said that the fire department was assisting by spraying water on the affected tanker to cool it, and emergency services were monitoring the vicinity with gas detectors.
Decanting the remaining gas into other tankers was expected to be completed by 20:00, but the leak was "under control", he said.
Unilever was not immediately available for comment.
