GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - A shark warning issued by the Knysna Municipality yesterday, Thursday, April 12 will remain in force until the beached whale carcass at Buffalo Bay has been disposed of and the site properly cleared.
Increased shark numbers and activity have been reported since Wednesday, April 11, most probably due to presence of the Bryde's Whale caracass. According to the NSRI sharks naturally feed on whale caracasses when they occur at sea.
The NSRI urges all bathers (and boaters, paddlers and surfers) to exercise caution in the waters along Knysna and Buffalo Bay, but also in the vicinity of Wilderness, Sedgefield and Plettenberg Bay, following several reports of sharks from fishermen and boaters.
It is believed that efforts to dispose of the massive whale resulted in spillage of waste from the carcass. This spillage essentially created a chum area, which attracts the sharks.
