EASTER WEEKEND AND BEYOND!
It feels like yesterday when we were making arrangements for the Christmas/New Year holiday period – and now it is already Easter!

Thursday the 5th of April will be the busy day with many motoring down to coastal resorts and up to the Moria Church Religious gathering in Limpopo Province and beyond to Zimbabwe.

The N1 to Cape Town and the N4 to Mozambique will also carry much traffic. On the N1 to Cape Town, Taxi drivers are now being forced to stop, take a rest and then continue on their journey to try and eliminate the carnage on the stretch of road between Beaufort West and Laingsburg. Also between Aberdeen and Beaufort West, the same rule applies – and it seems to be bearing fruit!

Monday the 9th, everybody will be heading back home and sincerely hope that road accidents this year will show a decline as more Law enforcement takes effect.

We suggest monitoring 7,110 MHz on Thursday from a bout noon onwards and the same for Monday the 9th. Obviously voluntary monitoring over the weekend will be appreciated.

We know Rob Byrne of JAMLINE will also appreciate messages from us via cell phone regarding road conditions, flooding and serious accidents and so on. Rob’s all hour number is listed lower down. (084-526.5463).

Friday the 27th of April is yet another ‘long weekend’ however we do not anticipate too much activity over that weekend but we will monitor on Thursday the 26th and Sunday the 29th of April.

For those going away, enjoy the weekend and drive safely!

N.S.R.I
Craig Lambinon, the ‘voice’ behind the National Sea Rescue Institute, gave us a presentation at the GAREC conference in August last year.

One of the items that came up for discussion was looking at a closer working relationship between HAMNET and NSRI when they need extra or an extended means of communications during a call out.

I suggested to Craig that we draw up a list of their stations and allocate a Hamnet operator nearest to a Station who could make himself available should such a situation arise!

The list of NSRI stations is quite large. Initially what I would like to suggest is that coastal operators access the NSRI web site and familiarise themselves with stations nearest to them.

The NSRI website can be located on www.nsri.co.za

Once in the site, look at the various access sites and click on “Stations and Crew”.

This immediately takes you to the various stations around the coast and once you have established the nearest station to you, gives you the name of the station commander, his cell number, their locations etc.

We could later establish a list of stations and relative information necessary in an emergency and also supply NSRI with a contact person nearest to their station for assistance with communication!

GENERAL COMMENTS
Point to ponder. This is AGM month in Pinetown this year on Saturday the 21st of April.

But….what concerns not only myself but other Councillors is the reluctance of new members to make themselves available to assist, help and participate in running the SARL by making themselves available to serve on Council!

Every now and again someone will comment on all the ‘old fossils’ running the SARL which is indicative of the reluctance of younger people to ‘get involved in our hobby’

Please consider making yourself available to serve on Council for 2013/4 – we need new ideas, input and participation!

We are also still on the lookout for someone to lead in the Limpopo Province and although I have had 2 offers for the Free State, someone in Bloemfontein is preferable.
